Are you sick of suffering with allergies, food sensitivities or constant sinus congestion and have no clue where to start?

Or perhaps you suffer with skin problems like acne, keratosis pilaris and eczema or other complicated health problems that you need help with.

See me and i will take all the guess work out of it for you.

If you are interested in a naturopathic consultation, there is now an opening special for your first consultation!

Save $49 and pay only $50 (usually $99)! Spots are limited so please book before the 1st of July to receive this discount.

Book your Naturopathic appointment today.

To find out what to expect from your consultation – please read further.

What to Expect – Initial Naturopathic Consultation

Typically, your first consultation is 1 hour long focusing on gathering information about your current state of health.

This information will give me a better understanding on the causative factors that are contributing to your health conditions, so that the symptoms and underlying problems are being addressed for long term results.

To get a more accurate picture of your current state of health and what may be causing your health concerns there are a few tests that are taken out during the initial consultation.

Tests During The Consultation

1. Zinc Tally Test
If you are deficient in this mineral, it can make you more prone to acne, other skin problems, allergies, colds and infections. Zinc deficiency is one of the most prevalent mineral deficiencies worldwide.

It is essential for healthy skin, wound healing, regulation of hormones and for a healthy immune system.

2. Urinary Indicans Test
An overgrowth of bacteria or yeast in your digestive system can be a big contributing factor to allergies and food sensitivities/intolerances.

This test shows us if there is a problem in your digestive system that needs to be addressed.

3. Urine & Saliva pH Testing
If the pH of your body gets out of balance by becoming too acidic your body will suffer immensely causing excess stress on your body to try and right the pH to a more alkaline one. Harmful effects of acidity include:

Digestive Problems –heart burn, acid reflux, overgrowth of bacteria and yeast in the digestive system leaving you more prone to allergies and skin problems

Headaches

Inflammation of joints

Lack of energy

Premature aging

Insomnia

Poor detoxification of toxins

Problems losing weight – Fat is an excellent binding agent necessary for storing toxins in your body to prevent it from doing any harm. This may be a cause to poor weight loss as your body may be holding onto this fat because your body is too toxic

After all of the testing has been done, I will go through with you a preliminary treatment plan to start on straight away so that you can begin addressing your health concerns. This may include dietary changes, herbal or nutritional supplements.

I encourage you to come back to me within 2 weeks so that I can provide you with a treatment strategy outline for all of your health concerns.

Treatment Program Follow Up Appointment – ½ hr

During this appointment, I will discuss with you the treatment plan that I have tailored for you that addresses all of the causative factors that I received from your first consultation.

I will show you the outline of the treatment plan so you have an understanding of what to expect from week to week so that you are completely informed on every part of your journey with me.

You will be given a dietary outline to follow, as well as prescribed nutritional and herbal supplements to support your body throughout the healing process.

Review Appointments – ½ hr

These appointments are scheduled anywhere between 2-4 weeks depending on the treatment plan given.

Each step of the treatment progress will require different nutritional/herbal supplements and lifestyle changes which I will explain in these review appointments. I will also assess how well you are doing on the plan and if you are happy with your progress.

If necessary, there may be slight changes in the treatment plan depending on your progress.

Don’t go through the lengthy process of sending your blood samples away to a laboratory to find out what foods you are intolerant/sensitive to, when you can receive the results in just 40 minutes.

Food Detectives Test is a quick and reliable food sensitivity test that was developed in the UK but is now finally available in Australia through health practitioners – including me.

Going through a test like this will give you the confidence that you are eliminating the right foods that your body is reacting to.

There is no more guess work or time consuming elimination diets and food challenges that you have to endure to get the answers.

You can start avoiding the foods that are making you feel unwell straight away, which means you can finally start feeling better!

If you have constant digestive troubles, sinus congestion, fatigue or any other symptoms that are really troubling you and you can’t figure out why, then you very well may have a food intolerance.

Many symptoms can be related to a food sensitivity, often the ones you least expect! Find out what symptoms can be connected to a food intolerance here.

Get Food Sensitivity Testing With Immediate Results

The Food Detectives test takes approximately 40 minutes and involves taking a small blood sample from your fingertip which is then diluted and used with the combination of solutions to detect the presence of food antibodies.

If your body is creating IgG antibodies to particular foods this means you have a food intolerance. Dark blue circles will appear on the tray only under the foods that you are intolerant to.

When there is no colour it indicates that you do not have an intolerance to the food can eat that food fine without a negative reaction.

To learn more about the Food Detectives test, you can visit the FAQ here.

Foods That Are Tested

Cereals – Corn, Durum Wheat, Gluten, Oats, Rice, Rye, Wheat.

Nuts & Beans – Almond, Brazil Nut, Cashew, Cocoa Bean, Peanut, Legume Mix (pea, lentil, haricot), Soya Bean, Walnut.

Meats – Beef, Chicken, Lamb, Pork.

Fish – Freshwater Fish Mix (salmon, trout), Shellfish Mix (shrimp, prawn, crab, lobster, mussel), Tuna, White Fish Mix (haddock, cod, plaice).

Vegetables – Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrot, Celery, Cucumber, Leek, Peppers (red, green, yellow), Potato.

Fruits – Apple, Blackcurrant, Grapefruit, Melon Mix (cantaloupe, water melon), Olive, Orange & Lemon, Strawberry, Tomato.

Symptoms Caused By A Food Sensitivity

Food Sensitivity can also be known as ‘hidden allergies’ because the symptoms that they cause can be delayed up to three days later after you have eaten the offending foods.

That makes it really hard on your part trying to figure out what food you are actually reacting to!

This is why more and more people are seeking out food sensitivity testing to really determine what it is their reacting to.

Symptoms that can be related to a food sensitivity include:

Anxiety (acute or chronic)

Arthritis

Asthma

Bed wetting

Bloating

Bronchitis

Coeliac Disease

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Constipation

Cystic Fibrosis

Fibromyalgia

Diarrhoea

Headaches

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Insomnia

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Itchy skin problems

Malabsorption

Migraine

Sleep disturbances

Water retention

Weight control problems

Simply Wize Crusty bread is a gluten free bread mix that you knead and make yourself. At first this was a little off putting for me as I have never made bread in my life, and when I do bake – things can go terribly wrong at times!

So I must admit I do not have a flair for cooking.

None the less, I decided to give it a go. I received a sample of Simply Wize Crusty bread from Momentum Foods to try and review.

It is a reasonably new bread mix and a first of its kind in Australia, made for those who are looking for a gluten free bread that tastes good, is crusty on the outside and soft in the middle!

I used to love the french sticks that I ate plentifully when i was a kid, I am a sucker for the crunchy crust of this sort of bread.

Ah it did sound very tempting on paper, but will it live up to my expectations?

My Previous Experience With Gluten Free Bread

I have tried many gluten free breads over the past few years and I must say that I haven’t ever tried a bread like this. Many of you can probably relate to the tiny, tasteless, nothing like real bread, gluten free bread covering our supermarket shelves and healthfood stores.

It can be a mission finding gluten free bread that you actually enjoy. I found this difficult initially when i was trying bread but did finally discover Sol Megagrain gluten free bread that is high in wholegrains that doesn’t contain any preservatives or nasties – something which i always look for and tastes really yummy.

I love the fennel seeds in this bread, it makes it really tasty!

However if you are looking for the sort of bread with the crusty outside and the soft middle, then Simply Wize Crusty bread would definitely be your choice as i have never come across a gluten free bread that tastes like this.

It tastes yummy and the outside is really crunchy – it is a little hard to cut into i must admit but it’s not jaw breaking stuff, it’s a perfect crusty texture and very easy to eat (and a lot i did, it’s really hard to put down once you start..)

Step by Step Instructions

The instructions on the back of the box are very easy to understand but i thought i would take pictures of each step for those of you who like to see it visually so you can compare where you are up to.

Step 1: Preheat Oven to 220 degrees Celsius

Step 2: In a small bowl blend yeast with water and let sit for 5 minutes

Step 3:In a large bowl add the bread mix, oil and the yeast mixture. Use a spoon or your hands (hands are easier) to mix the ingredients together for 1-2 minutes.

Step 4: Knead the dough for another 10 minutes (I found I only needed 5-6 minutes). Form into a ball and let sit for 5 minutes, covering with a tea towel

Step 5: Take a rolling pin and flatten the dough to a thickness of 1 cm and then roll it up into a swiss roll

Step 6: Place on a tray lined with baking paper, cover with a moist towel or clean plastic and place in a warm draft free area until doubled in size (Approx 1 hour).

Step 7:Using a sharp blade cut the surface of the dough 3-4 times in a diagonal direction.

Step 8: Bake for 35 minutes until golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow

Step 9: Slice and Enjoy!

The Simply Wize Crusty Bread contains no animal fat, artificial colours or added MSG, it is also fructose friendly for those of you with a fructose intolerance.

The process really doesn’t take much effort at all – it’s definitely worth the little effort you put in for some yummy tasting gluten free bread!

Did It Live Up To My Expectations?

I really enjoyed the taste of the Simply Wize crusty bread!

All of the memories of eating crusty French stick bread from when I was a kid came flooding back – ah the texture was truly satisfying!

Simply Wize successfully met my expectations with the taste and texture of normal wheat crusty bread, something I was yet to experience with my previous gluten free bread experiences.

Though my expectations were highly met, there were a couple of things with the bread mix that raised an eyebrow.

As a Naturopath, I have a tendency to always check the ingredients of all the food items I purchase every time I go grocery shopping (yes my boyfriend thinks i am a little fanatical).

But just so you know it is for a very important purpose! And that is to ensure that what i am putting into my body is closest to nature – meaning free of man made preservatives, chemicals, artificial colours and flavours which may have a negative impact on my body.

So i did the same thing for this bread mix. I did find a couple of things that stood out which I would like to mention to you, just in case you may not be able to tolerate it because of these ingredients.

Here is the breakdown.

The Ingredients

Whenever I see numbers in an ingredients listing I get a little nervous because sometimes they can represent an ingredient that can have potential side effects in some people.

So i took the liberty to look up all of the numbers in the ingredients. To my surprise the majority of numbers are completely safe and naturally derived apart from two.

Ingredients - Maize Flour, Rice Starch, Tapioca Starch, Soy Protein, Egg White, Sugar, Iodised Salt, Stabilizers (461, 464, 407), Dextrose, Emulsifier (472e), Guar Gum (412), Stabilizer (466). (Not suitable for those of you also with an egg or soy allergy)

407 – Carrageenan

This is used as a thickener, stabilizer or gelling agent and may contain or create MSG. It may cause problems in the gastrointestinal tract and stomach. Ulcerative colitis has also been linked with this ingredients.

So yes these two ingredients may cause potential side effects if used in excess, I would not recommend to eat this bread in excess of one per week if you are particularly sensitive and prone to gastrointestinal disturbances.

466 – Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose

This is commonly made from cotton by products and can be genetically modified. With this ingredient there is some confusion on whether or not it is safe or harmful.

Potential effects may include flatulence, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps when used in large amounts. Since this ingredient is the very last ingredient in the listing, that means it contains the lowest amount by weight so it would be quite safe to say that these potential effects would not be experienced in this product.

Added Sugar & Dextrose

I wasn’t fond of the sugar and dextrose being added to the ingredients, I find it unnecessary and unhealthy as it is a food (if you can call it that) that is processed and completely devoid of any nutrition whatsoever.

However I was happy to see in the nutritional panel that the sugar content was only 1.2g per loaf which is very minimal, so I was relieved that there wasn’t a lot added into the flour!

Where To Purchase

This bread mix can be puchased from Woolworths, Franklins, selected Coles and IGA supermarkets as well as some health food stores for $5.95. There is also a french stick bread mix available as well.

4/5 Rating

All in all, I would definitely recommend this to anyone seeking a gluten free bread substitute that tastes good and is looking for a bread that is very close to conventional wheat bread! You will not be disappointed!

Research has demonstrated that an application of honey to Seborrheic Dermatitis can help relieve itching and scaling in as little as one week and even heal it completely!

I know it sounds too good to be true, but raw honey (unprocessed) has naturally occurring antibacterial and antifungal properties. So it makes sense that it helps reduce the itching of Seborrheic Dermatitis as this is exacerbated by the yeast Malassezia furfur (Pityrosporum Ovale).

This yeast has infinity for the sebaceous glands as it requires the oil to survive, grow and replicate. So you can commonly find Seborrheic Dermatitis where the sebaceous glands are most prominent.

Where Is Seborrheic Dermatitis Located?

The face and scalp are the most common areas to see Seborrheic Dermatitis, especially around the nose, on the nasal creases, eye lids, eyebrows, and also behind the ears.

When affecting the scalp it is commonly called ‘dandruff’, when it occurs in babies it is called ‘cradle cap’.

When the yeast grows rapidly, the cell renewal of the skin is disturbed and can result in Seborrheic Dermatitis which is characterised by itchy, red, flaking, scaly skin.

It also has been hypothesized that there may be an abnormal immune response to this naturally occurring yeast on the skin resulting in inflammation producing the skin problem.

None the less, it would be very beneficial for you with Seborrheic Dermatitis to use natural antifungal treatments to help manage the growth of yeast on the skin in turn reducing the itchiness and the redness.

Step By Step Treatment

I am recommending here what was demonstrated in the clinical trial of thirty patients with the topical honey treatment on Seborrheic Dermatitis lesions.

Step 1. Apply a diluted raw honey mixture (90% honey diluted in warm water) directly to the Seborrheic Dermatitis lesions, of the scalp, face, chest or wherever it is located. Do so every two, to three days for 4 weeks. (Apply after cleansed skin)

Step 2. Gently rub the diluted honey into the lesions for 2-3 minutes

Step 3. Leave the honey on for 3 hours

Step 4. Rinse the honey off with warm water

When to Expect Results

According to the trial, within one week the itching and scaling had disappeared.

In the second week, the skin lesions were healing and some had disappeared completely by the end of the second week.
Those who had the skin lesions on their scalp with associated hair loss received a marked improvement in the rate of their hair loss, decreasing dramatically.

The patients who were treated once weekly for the following 6 months (15 patients) after the initial 4 week treatment did not show any relapse of the skin condition. The other 15 patients who stopped treatment had relapse of the lesions within 2-4 months.

What Else Contributes to Seborrheic Dermatitis?

Applying the honey treatment will greatly provide you with fast relief of the skin condition. Whilst you do the external treatment it may also be beneficial for you to look into the deeper underlying causes to your skin condition.

Other factors that have been associated in causing Seborrheic Dermatitis are:

Candida Overgrowth – Candida is another type of fungal infection found in the digestive system tract and is commonly found in Seborrheic Dermatitis sufferers.

Food Allergies/Sensitivities – Getting tested for food sensitivities may be a good idea to determine what foods trigger your skin condition.

High Fat Diet – The use of a lot of bad fats in the diet can create a worsening of the skin condition

Poor Immune System Function – Low immunity can make you more prone to fungal infections, viruses and bacteria.

Nutrient Deficiencies – Deficiencies of Zinc and B vitamins can lower you immune system but also increase sebum production that could contribute to Seborrheic Dermatitis

High Refined Sugar Intake – Sugar can trigger Seborrheic Dermatitis by suppressing the immune system and being a source of food for the yeast.

There you go, a natural skin care treatment for Seborrheic Dermatitis – but please don’t forget to look at your body holistically and what you can change in your lifestyle or diet that will give you a healthier body and healthier skin!

Also, just a warning – please do not use honey on open wounds like ulcerations or cuts as it can actually make it worse. When using honey on open wounds and cuts only use the medicated wound care and not just the straight raw honey as it has been treated in such a way that it is safe to use.

Is your nose constantly dripping? Perhaps you can feel something running down the back of your throat.

Are you familiar with that constant ‘eh hem’ sound you make whilst you clear your throat of mucus?

Constant coughing and chest infections can be caused from excessive dripping of mucus down the throat. Yep mucus is a great breeding ground for infections!

If you have the above symptoms, you may have what is termed ‘post nasal drip.’

Why Does Post Nasal Drip Occur?

There can be two forms of post nasal drip – thick and sticky that can often be yellow/green indicating an infection or it can be thin and watery. Both types of post nasal drip have very different causes.

Thick and Sticky

Thick and sticky post nasal drip can occur as a result of an infection usually triggered by upper respiratory infections during a cold. When the sinuses aren’t being cleared properly, the excessive mucus is forced to drip down the back of the throat.

Chest infections and coughing usually result from this type of post nasal drip.

Yellow/green post nasal drip usually corrects itself after the upper respiratory infection has cleared.

If the mucus is yellow or green long term in absence of a cold, there is still an infection which must be assessed and treated by boosting the immune system and using anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agents.

Where there is thick mucus without the yellow/green colour, it may be caused from the lack of moisture in the air which can dry out the mucus membranes of the nose.

This dryness forces your mucous membranes to work overtime to try and produce the mucous to protect the lining of the nose. Overcome this by ensuring you drink enough fluids to keep your body hydrated, and using a saline nasal drop to lubricate the nose.

Thin and Watery

The thin and watery type of post nasal drip tend to have it either daily or weekly in absence of an infection. There can be many triggers of this type of post nasal drip -

Food Sensitivities – I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but many people who have post nasal drip that is constant and quite chronic can be reacting to gluten or dairy. When these are eliminated, the post nasal drip tends to completely eliminate itself. If you think this may be you, going through a Naturopath or Doctor for an IgG antibody blood test will determine what foods you may be reacting to.

Environmental Irritants – Dust, dust mites, mould, animal dander and pollen can all act like an irritant in the nose in sensitive individuals. These allergens irritate the mucous membranes of the nose, making your nose produce more mucus to protect itself and trap the irritant to eliminate it. As a result post nasal drip can occur.

Cold air - Air conditioning, and cold climate can cause your nose to run more.

Spicy Foods – Spicy foods increases circulation and makes the mucus very watery causing your nose to drip

Natural Treatment

Avoid food you are sensitive to once you have been accurately tested through an IgG blood test

Bromelain – Assists with reducing swelling of the nose and inflammation that can make your nose feels like it’s blocked and you can’t blow the mucus out. It will also reduce the stickiness of the mucous if you have thick sticky post nasal drip

Quercetin - Reduces allergic responses by inhibiting histamine release from mast cells that trigger an allergic response to environmental allergens that can lead to a runny nose. This will assist those of you with post nasal drip commonly triggered by dust mites, mould, pollens and animal dander

Neti Pot - This is a tea pot shaped device that involves using a salt water solution that you use to wash out your nasal passages. Do this twice a day and it will help clear out allergens, excess mucus and any bacteria.

Avoid spicy foods- If you find that spicy foods can cause your nose to run, try to avoid it as much as you can. The worst is when you’re at a restaurant eating something super spicy and you are having to wipe your nose every 5 minutes! Curry powder, chilli,

Increase your immunity – If you are prone to sinus/chest infections caused from your post nasal drip then improving your immunity will be very beneficial to prevent these infections from occurring. Assess your diet by ensuring you are eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, minimise fried foods, junk foods and sugar, drink 1.5 – 2L of water daily. Zinc and Vitamin C are very important for healthy immunity. Herbs such as Echinacea, Olive Leaf, and Astragalus may be beneficial to take as a preventative.

Post nasal drip can be quite a mystery to treat at times, I hope that the above has given you a bigger picture into what may be causing your post nasal drip so you have a better chance of getting rid of it for good!

Please post your experiences on post nasal drip and what may or may not have worked for you.

Don’t let your children or yourself for that matter, miss out on Easter this year because of food allergies.

Today there are now many allergy free alternatives that you can give your child so that they can join in on the Easter fun and the chocolate eating – safely.

Sweet Williams – Dairy free, Nut free and Gluten free

This brand of allergy free chocolate is one of the most popular amongst the kiddies and adults alike because of its creamy, light flavour which is closer to real milk chocolate than a dark chocolate substitute.

Instead of using cow’s milk as the main ingredient, they have opted for a soy milk base which provides the creamy texture – sorry to say not suitable for those with a soy allergy.

You can purchase a box of three individually wrapped bunnies or their newer Easter bunny multipacks containing fifteen colourful individually wrapped bunny faces.

Unfortunately Sweet Williams do not make any Easter eggs, I know talk about disappointment! But for those of you with a creative spark, Sweet Williams do sell 100g blocks of white chocolate and the original chocolate that you can melt down and use in Easter egg moulds.

Where can I find Sweet Williams?

Both Coles and Darrell Lea are usually the most well stocked stores of Sweet Williams chocolate during Easter time.

You can also try local health food stores that sometimes may choose to stock the chocolate over Easter.

If worse comes to worse and you have left it a little too late, you can purchase the multipack bunny chocolates from this website which has a rather fast delivery time.

Kinnerton Chocolate – Dairy free, Nut free, Gluten free, Egg free

Kinnerton chocolate is a dark chocolate which is great to use in cooking if the recipe calls for it or to be eaten on its own for lovers of dark rich chocolate.

Because it is a dark chocolate, I know children may have an aversion to the more bitter taste that dark chocolate brings. So you may want to save purchasing this chocolate for Adult only Easter treats.

Where can I find Kinnerton Chocolate?

Kinnerton is commonly found in Aldi, Big W, Coles, Darrell Lea, K-Mart, Priceline and Target.

Raw Chocolate – Dairy free, Gluten free, Sugar free

Raw chocolate is absolutely heavenly with its soft, smooth texture that dissolves in your mouth. Eating raw chocolate is quite the experience and it’s perfect for those of you with food allergies to dairy and gluten.

In raw chocolate, the cacao bean (chocolate) is in its absolute purest form meaning it is untouched of any cooking or processing that is usually carried out in the normal roasted chocolate bar.

With no processing, the naturally occurring minerals and antioxidants found in the cacao bean are preserved, which means you get a healthy kick of nutrients whilst you indulge in this heavenly chocolate.

The antioxidants present in the cacao bean are found to be 30 times higher than red wine and 20 times higher than green tea! Who knew improving your health could taste so good?

Not only that, cacao is also a great source of Magnesium which is vital for a healthy heart – a significant amount of people are easily deficient in this mineral.

Raw chocolate can come in several different flavours including orange, peppermint, coconut and chilli – the combinations are endless.

Introduce your loved one to the world of raw chocolate! You can show them just how easy it is to still enjoy chocolate even with a dairy or gluten allergy.

Where can I find Raw Chocolate?

Raw chocolate is yet to be found in your local supermarket, so your best bet would be to check your closest health food store. Most health food stores will stock at least one brand of raw chocolate.

Before you buy raw chocolate, please ensure that it does state dairy free or gluten free on the packaging depending on the allergy. Even though all raw chocolate that I have seen is always gluten and dairy free, I can’t ensure that absolutely all brands are.

Thankfully finding Easter chocolate alternatives for your family and friends this year should be a little easier for you with the variety of chocolate alternatives now widely available.

Happy Easter everybody!

Food sensitivities are commonly known as hidden allergies because the symptoms can be delayed up to three days after you have eaten the food, creating a lot of hard work on your behalf to determine the food you are reacting to.

Symptoms can be so broad in food sensitivities that if two people were compared with a sensitivity to milk, one person could experience joint pain in their fingers where the other one may have a rash on their body all year round. It’s also not uncommon to have more than one symptom occurring from one food sensitivity either.

Not Feeling Like Your Normal Self?

If you are experiencing a bunch of strange symptoms and you can’t figure out what is causing it, then you may possibly have a food sensitivity. But before you start eliminating every single food from your diet you may want to read what has caused your food sensitivity in the first place, and how you can rectify this problem!

Even though avoiding the foods you might be sensitive to is a pretty good option, if the cause of the problem is not solved you may find you will have to avoid more and more foods each year – and trust me this isn’t fun!

Living on water and a limited amount food is not only unhealthy but it will also make you go crazy.

There Is More To It Than Just Avoiding Food

Your digestive system plays a massive part in modulating a healthy immune system! Without these two important systems working efficiently, you will become very prone to the production of food sensitivities and other allergies.

In this four part series I will help you understand the importance of a healthy digestive system in relation to food sensitivities, as well as the steps you can take to heal your body and minimize food sensitivities.

The Digestive System & Immune System Connection

The largest part of your immune system is surprisingly located in the mucosal lining of your small intestine. Here your immune cells work very hard at constantly sampling the environment of your small intestine, trying to detect foreign invaders that have entered your body. Viruses, bacteria and a number of undesirable substances are picked up by your immune cells which are then escorted out of the body before they can do any harm.

When your digestive system is running smoothly, your immune system is able to differ between foreign invaders such as viruses and harmless substances like food. But if you are like many Australians with food sensitivities and allergies, it is most likely that your digestive system is not functioning at it’s complete capacity producing a huge burden on your immune system.

Symptoms of Poor Digestive System Function

Poor functioning of your digestive system is probably not something you enjoy sharing with your friends at a dinner party. It can be embarrassing to talk about especially if things just aren’t functioning like they should be, and it’s definitely not something you want to keep ignoring.

So many diseases have been shown to stem from a poor diet and poor digestive function especially food sensitivities.

A good functioning digestive system should be a priority on everyone’s list including yours, so let’s take a look at what symptoms could be hinting that you have trouble in this area and how it can be contributing to your food sensitivities.

Symptoms

Bloating after meals

Reflux

Excessive gas production after meals

Burping after meals

Constipation (Not having regular bowel movements everyday)

Ongoing diarrhoea or loose bowel movements

Undigested food in your bowel movements

Stomach pain or cramping not associated with the menstrual cycle

Feeling nauseous after eating

If you have any of the above symptoms on a regular basis, it means your digestion is not working at it’s very best which could be confusing your immune system! This can create a number of food sensitivities.

How Poor Digestion Can Lead to Food Sensitivities

When you have poor digestion, it means that you aren’t breaking down the food in your stomach like you should be. This can be caused by many things like not chewing your food properly, eating on the run, drinking water with your meals, eating while you are stressed, antibiotics, excess alcohol intake, high sugar and junk food diet, low stomach acid and insufficient digestive enzyme production.

Your food must be digested into small food particles that are small enough to allow for the small intestine to absorb the nutrients it needs through the mucosal wall. If you are unsuccessfully digesting your food like you should be, over time this can create havoc in your digestive system.

Leaky Gut Syndrome

Instead of small particles entering the small intestine, large particles are because your digestion is not working properly to be able to break the food down into smaller particles. Over time this can really irritate the mucosal wall lining of the small intestine creating inflammation, causing holes to open up in the lining (commonly called Leaky Gut Syndrome).

In an ideal environment, your mucosal lining is supposed to be impermeable and should only allow the nutrients it needs to pass through, whilst stopping undesirable substances like large food particles, viruses, bacteria and toxins from passing.

But in this scenario, the holes that open up are now large enough to allow undigested food particles to pass. This puts your immune system on high alert, as it suspects the large food particle to be a foreign invader. Antibodies are produced by your immune system to begin the immune reaction, releasing substances such as histamine to initiate the attack to bring down the invader.

A Food Sensitivity is Created

Every time you eat that particular food that has been identified as foreign by your immune system, it will be able to recognize that food faster and will respond quicker often with worser symptoms each time you eat that food.

If the permeability of your gut lining continues to worsen, you can become sensitive to more and more foods that you regularly eat. For example if you eat tomatoes every day, because your immune system is constantly seeing the undigested large food particles of a tomato in your blood stream it will produce antibodies against them creating an immune reaction to them.

It is very important to not get into the habit of eating the same foods every single day, having a wide variety of foods in your diet is essential to prevent more and more food sensitivities from occurring.

Healing your digestive system

To give your digestive system the chance to heal itself, there are lifestyle factors you will have to consider as well as supplements that you can take to speed up the recovery.

In the following articles I will discuss what you can do to optimise your poor digestion, and what tools you can use to heal the permeability in your digestive system lining.

Healing your digestive system is imperative to prevent further food sensitivities from occurring and to have a chance of getting rid of the ones you already have.

Have you been newly diagnosed with Celiac disease? Do you feel like you’re starving because you have no idea what you can and can’t eat without having an attack of stomach pain, bloating and nausea?

Well, the fact is, there are many different grains that are naturally gluten free and can easily replace your normal gluten based foods.

Yes it will take time, patience and effort but once you have gone gluten free you will feel a million times better and your gluten free diet will become second nature before you know it.

Feeling like the odd one out?

Even though you may feel like an odd ball, gluten intolerance also known as Celiac disease is actually becoming very prevalent in Australia.

Now Celiac disease is being diagnosed in 1 of every 50 adults and it’s still on the rise! Gluten intolerance is most prevalent in western countries, because of the amount of wheat based products that we consume.

You can find gluten in all sorts of foods that you would least expect, like tomato sauce or canned soups. In Japan and China, Celiac disease is almost non existent because their diet is based so heavily on rice.

Do I really need to eat gluten free all the time?

Even though Celiac disease won’t kill you, it can greatly impact your health later down the track if you decide against a gluten free diet.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease which means your immune system will start to attack your own tissue and destroy it, in this case, it is your small intestine that is destroyed.

As a result of this immune attack, inflammation will occur which will begin to produce some characteristic symptoms of Celiac disease such as bloating, stomach cramping, diarrhea and vomiting.

If you continue to eat gluten rich foods, the little projections that stick out from your small intestine called villi begin to get destroyed.

Instead of the villi standing nice and tall they end up small and flat, which means you don’t absorb vitamins and minerals from your food as easily as you should. Your body then doesn’t get the nutrients it needs to work at its very best causing you to feel very tired and sick!

Gluten free grains

Discover 6 gluten free grains that are great to use in gluten free diets.

1. Rice

This is a gluten free grain which is really affordable, tastes great and is easy to cook! Rice is a great staple in a gluten free diet. It can come in white rice, basmati or jasmine rice as well as brown rice.

Brown or basmati rice are the healthier options as they are naturally higher in fibre and are not as refined therefore containing more minerals than just white rice.

2. Quinoa (pronounced keen-wa)

This grain is a complete protein as it contains the eight essentials amino acids that the body needs to receive from the diet. It is also high in Calcium, Iron, and is a good source of vitamin E and B vitamins.

If using the grain, it can be cooked like rice in boiling water or a rice cooker. It is great as a replacement of cous cous, it can be eaten in salads, casseroles or in soups. Quinoa flakes are also available which can be cooked similar to oats to make a porridge for breakfast.

3. Amaranth

This is a highly nutritious grain, it is a great source of fibre, essential amino acids and minerals. You can buy it puffed which is ideal for cereals or the whole grain that can be cooked like rice. It tends to have a sticky texture compared to other grains when cooked.

4. Corn

This grain has a multitude of uses and is a definite staple in a gluten free diet. You can use cornmeal for making cornbread, and tortillas or you can use cornflour to thicken soups, sauces and stews. Corn makes up the majority of Mexican dishes such as burritos, tacos and enchiladas which is wonderful for gluten avoiders!

5. Buckwheat

Even though its name may suggest it contain wheat, its actually gluten free. Buckwheat is a fruit derived from the same family as rhubarb.

You can use buckwheat flour to make buckwheat pancakes, puffed buckwheat in cereals or the whole grain. It is high in fibre, protein, B vitamins and it is great for keeping your blood sugar levels balanced.

6. Millet

Millet is a gluten free grain, rich in B vitamins, Magnesium, Potassium, lecithin, methionine, Phosphorous and vitamin E. You can use puffed millet in cereals similar to buckwheat and amaranth. The flour can also be used in combination with other flours to make bread.

Be Careful! Gluten could be playing hide and seek

When purchasing the above grains, even though they are naturally gluten free, the products you purchase may have been processed on the same machinery used for gluten foods.

So keep on the look out for cross contamination! To be on the safe side stick to only foods that say on the label ‘gluten free’ even if it’s a gluten free grain.

Thanks to the prevalence of gluten food intolerances there are now numerous wheat and gluten replacements found in your local supermarket or health food store ranging from bread, cereal and cookies to spaghetti in a can!

These are great if you have little time to cook your own meals, but don’t get into the habit of basing your whole diet on these quick gluten free foods, as they are still processed and are often high in sugar.

To have a balanced nutritious diet, try and eat a variety of the gluten free grains particularly quinoa, millet, buckwheat and amaranth that are very high in fibre, protein, minerals and vitamins.

Gluten free recipe books are perfect to begin enjoying these 6 gluten free grains. You can purchase them from any good book store or online.

Depending on the severity of your lactose intolerance will determine how strict you are with your lactose free diet. Avoiding dairy rich foods can be hard at first, but once you have made the swap, your taste buds will become adjusted to the new taste of dairy free food and your body will thank you for it.

We understand avoiding dairy rich foods all the time can sometimes feel impossible, particularly on those very special occasions where that yummy birthday cake and icecream is staring you right in the face. Chocolate cake just doesn’t taste the same without icecream does it? That’s why we’ve also put together a back up plan so you can still enjoy that creamy goodness on those very special occasions.

Lactose Free Diet

The lactose free diet is fairly simple. All it involves it replacing your dairy food with a dairy free alternative. For each dairy free alternative we have also suggested brands of food that we know tastes good and will help make the transition a bit easier for you!

Dairy Alternatives

Here are a few options.

Milk

Vitasoy Rice Milk – This tastes great in smoothies or on cereal, it is a light watery consistency with a mild rice taste making it a great one to start on.
Note: If you are worried about not getting enough Calcium, you can purchase the Vitasoy Rice milk with added Calcium.

Pure Harvest Soy Milk- Soy milk is a thicker consistency compared to rice milk and is great in porridge. It also tastes great with chai tea, and not bad in coffee. Make sure you are not also allergic to Soy before swapping over, it sometimes can cause people to feel upset in the stomach if there is a food sensitivity.

Zymil Lactose free milk- This is the closest tasting milk to regular cow’s milk without the lactose! The lactose has been previously digested by adding the enzyme lactase needed to breakdown lactose. If you are only lactose intolerance then this is a great alternative, but often people can be lactose intolerance and be sensitive to the casein found in milk. So give it a go and see how you feel.

Cheese

Since cheese is one of the lowest lactose containing foods out of all the dairy products, you may be able to tolerate it small amounts. If you are extremely sensitive then you can replace it with Tofutti Cream Cheese.

Ice Cream

Mototo Ice cream

Fruccio Dairy free ice cream

So Good Soy Ice cream

Fruit Sorbets – We know fruit sorbet isn’t the same as ice cream but it can be deliciously refreshing during summer

Yoghurt

UHT lactose free yoghurt

Vaalia lactose free yoghurt

Protein powder

Vital Greens Phyto-Pea Protein: This protein is naturally derived from golden peas, and uses natural vanilla bean flavour or cocoa flavour for chocolate. Pea protein is the only alkalising protein on the market compared to normal protein which is acidic, so it’s a very healthy alternative.

Max’s WPI: This protein is derived from whey but is lactose free.

Balance WPI: This protein is the same as Max’s and is lactose free.

Ladybird Rice Protein: This protein comes in chocolate or vanilla, is naturally lactose free and is one of the better tasting rice proteins on the market.

Miscellaneous

Kingland Mayonnaise

The back up plan

We know you can’t be perfect all the time, and there are going to be situations where eating dairy free could be completely out of the question. So for those sorts of situations, investing in an emergency blottle of lacteeze could very well save you from turning a nice night out into another embarrassing situation.

Lacteeze – Is a lactase enzyme supplement that you take prior to eating dairy foods. It supplies you with the enzymes needed to digest the lactose, preventing those unpleasant symptoms that usually follows after eating dairy. It’s extremely handy for those dinner parties or restaurant outings where you are tempted to have that ice cream!

In the following section we’ll take a look at why you have food allergies, helping to shed some light on the topic and the path to freedom.

Food allergies and intolerances can produce a wide range of symptoms that could make it very hard for you to pin point the exact food that you are reacting to. Here we explain the different types of symptoms that can be produced depending on the type of allergic reaction you are having to that food. Hopefully this helps narrow it down for you, so that you can figure out what food is making you feel so sick.

How are allergic symptoms produced?

Allergic symptoms are produced when your immune system identifies a food as harmful. This is an abnormal response to food, once your immune system has identified it as a foregin invader a number of weapons are produced to destroy the food allergen.

Such ‘weapons’ that your immune system releases includes a substance called histamine. This substance along with others initiates a variety of frustrating body reactions such as stomach cramps, itchy skin, fatigue or in other words – allergy symptoms. Sometimes these symptoms can occur straight away, or they may happen 24 hours later or even a couple of days later. The length of time it takes for your body to produce symptoms is all determined by the type of immune response.

Food allergies can be placed into two categories:

Hypersensitivity Food Allergy

Food Sensitivity

Food can also make you feel really sick if you have a food intolerance, which means you lack the enzymes needed to digest that particular food. There are a few different food intolerances that can occur, so take a look at the characteristic symptoms that may happen with each food so you can narrow down what food is making you ill.

Hypersensitivity Food Allergy (Anaphylaxis)

The hypersensitivity food allergy or ‘Anaphylaxis’ can be life threatening as the following symptoms begin to occur:

Sudden itching of the eyes and face

Face swelling

Throat tightness, swallowing discomfort and breathing difficulty

Chest tightness and or wheezing

Hives

Drowsiness

Mental confusion and dizziness

Diarrhoea

Vomiting

If you have this type of immmune reaction to a food allergy your immune system will react immediately, creating these symptoms soon after you eat the food culprit. Another name for this reaction is called Anaphylaxis (an-uh-fuh-LAK-sis) which involves an antibody called IgE and is what is measured and tested in blood tests to find out the exact food allergy you are reacting to.

The main foods that have been found to commonly cause this type of food allergy in adults include:

Peanuts

Shellfish

Eggs

Fish

Tree nuts (hazelnut, almonds, brazil, macadamia, cashews etc)

The most common food triggers of anaphylaxis in children are:

Milk

Eggs

Soy

Sesame

Peanuts

Tree nuts

</ul

Even though these foods are considered the most common, hypersensitivity food allergy reactions can still occur in almost any food even foods such as strawberries, tomatoes, and coconut.

So if you ever experience these symptoms after any food please phone for emergency immediately.

Food Sensitivity

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0"><tr><td><img src="http://www.liveallergyfree.com.au/images/0749917008/" /><td></tr><tr><td><td></tr></table>

This type of food allergy can be very hard to pin point as the symptoms can be delayed for up to a few days later.

Some people may be more sensitive to a food than others and may get a reaction a few hours later.

So even if this can be almost an immediate reaction it still varies from a hypersensitive allergy reaction as a different antibody is involved called an IgG antibody and the symptoms differ greatly.

Common symptoms that occur in response to food sensitivities include but are not limited to:

Sinus congestion

Stomach cramping

Bloating

IBS

Skin rashes such as eczema or hives

Itchy Skin

Fatigue

Foggy head

Asthma

Joint pain

Common food sensitivities are egg, dairy products, wheat products, seafood, corn, soy and nuts.

Food Intolerance

Food intolerance is not like a food allergy or food sensitivity that is caused from an immune reaction. Instead it is when your body is not capable of digesting a food that is considered nutritious for your body. This occurs because your body does not have the right tools (enzymes) to break down that particular food.

The two main food intolerances are:

Lactose Intolerance (Carbohydrate)

Gluten Intolerance (Protein)

Fat Intolerance

Lactose Intolerance

Lactose is a sugar molecule found solely in dairy products. It is caused from the inability to digest lactose in the small intestine due to poor lactase (enzyme) production needed to do so. Lactose intolerance occurs very highly in Asian, Middle Eastern, Southern European, African and Aboriginal groups. Those with European backgrounds tend to have a less likely occurrence of lactose intolerance.

The lactose content of each dairy food varies widely, however the main foods to have the greatest amount are:

Food

Serve

Lactose

Calcium (mg)

Milk – Regular

1 cup/250ml

12

285

Milk – Reduced Fat

1 cup/250ml

13

340

Yoghurt – Regular

200gm

9

340

Yoghurt – Low Fat

200gm

12

420

Cheese – Cheddar

30gm

.02

260

Cheese – Creamed Cottage

30gm

.01

22

Butter

1 tsp

.03

1

Ice Cream

2 scoops

3

55

By looking at the above table, you can see that milk and yoghurt contain the highest amounts of lactose per serve.
Carbohydrate Intolerances

Other rare carbohydrate intolerances that may occur are; Glucose intolerance, starch intolerance, fructose intolerance, and sucrose intolerance. These are all different types of sugars and carbohydrates that occur because your body is not producing the right enzymes to digest them.

The symptoms produced by these different carbohydrate intolerances can be very similar to lactose intolerance. Bloating and gas production are usually the most outstanding symptoms associated with a carbohydrate intolerance, occuring within an hour after the ingestion of the offending food.

Gluten Intolerance

Gluten intolerance also known as Celiacs disease is caused from your body being sensitive to the protein, gluten found in wheat, rye, oats and barley.. The immune system of a Celiac person will see gluten as harmful, overtime leading to inflammation and damage in the small intestine. This damage in the small intestine can greatly reduce your ability to absorb nutrients as the immune system damages the structure of the small intestine needed to do so.

Symptoms may not always be present in gluten intolerance, but damage to the small intestine may still continue. If symptoms are present in gluten intolerance the following symptoms could be experienced:

Weight loss or weight gain

Nutritional deficiencies e.g. low iron levels

Gastro-intestinal problems (gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea)

Fat in the stools (poor digestion)

Eczema

Exhaustion

Headaches

Irritability

Arthritis

Eczema

Fat Intolerance

Fat intolerance occurs when your body can not digest the fats in food properly, causing poor absorption of fats resulting in the following symptoms:

Diarrhoea

Wind

Bowel movements called Steatorrhoea (stee-at-OR-rea) that are frothy and smell foul

Fat intolerance usually presents in people who have diseases such as Celiac disease, cystic fibrosis, liver and gall bladder disease, diabetes and pancreas problems.

The symptoms can be very broad and can often get confused with other food allergy symptoms. Diagnosing yourself solely on these symptoms should be avoided. If Celiacs disease runs in your family or you feel very sick from eating gluten containing foods, then it may be a good idea to go to the Doctor to get tested.
