Why Am I Allergic To Food?

Food allergies are created from a combination of lifestyle factors that causes glitches and hiccups in your immune system leading to wrongful attacks to foods that are usually considered harmless. Allergies can be created for a variety of reasons that differs from person to person, so we will look at a few reasons why.

Lifestyle factors that may cause the production of food allergies include;

Hereditary traits

You may have been lucky enough to have inherited your food allergies from your parents. When you were a baby in your mother’s stomach, she could have unintentionally passed them onto you through the placenta. The allergens and the antibodies produced by her immune system in response to the allergy can be passed on to you, so when you are born you will react to the same allergen in a similar way. Allergies can also be passed through breast milk in the same way. Eczema and asthma are common symptoms of early food allergies in children.

Introduced to solid foods too early as a child

As an infant, the digestive system is not completely developed up to about 6 months of age and does not contain the adequate good bacteria important for proper digestion of foods. If solid foods are introduced into an infant’s diet before their digestive system is properly developed it can make them more vulnerable to food allergies as well as bad bacteria that could lead to gastric problems.

Poor eating habits

If you don’t eat a healthy well balanced diet of grains, fruit, vegetables, and meat relying heavily on junk foods to satisfy your hunger you will not receive the nutrients needed for a well functioning immune system. This in turn can dysregulate the immune system leading to abnormal reactions to food.

Toxic overload

Toxic over load can leave you more susceptible to allergies. On a day to day basis your body is exposed to numerous toxins externally (.e.g pollution) and internally (bacteria, parasites, chemicals in food, food additives/preservatives). This places a rather large burden on your body to detoxify these toxic substances on a day to day basis. So when you come in contact with a food in large amounts it can confuse your immune system into thinking it is toxic, thus creating an allergic reaction.

Poor digestion

This can be a great contributor to the production of food allergies. If you eat while you’re on the run, stressed or drink copius amounts of water with your meals you can greatly affect how well you break down your food. Incomplete digestion of your food will make it very hard for your body to absorb vitamins and minerals needed for a healthy immune system. It will also leave undigested food particles in your digestive system which overtime can initiate food allergies/sensitivities because they are large enough to be seen by your immune system as harmful.

Excess intake of alcohol, antibiotics and drugs

These toxic substances are really a no brainer. If used regularly, they can damage the precious lining of your digestive system. Once this happens it means that large undigested food particles cross directly into your blood stream too early, which means bad news for you. Those food particles that shouldn’t be in your blood stream are identified as harmful invaders by your immune system. Your immune system launches an attack and now after eating that particular food you may feel sick in your stomach, or break out in a rash.

Excessive intake of a limited amount of foods:

Eating the same foods over and over again every day for years can ultimately lead to food sensitivities and intolerances. Usually it happens to the food that you absolutely love but just can’t have anymore because it sends you running to the toilet or has you in agonizing pain. This can occur because you have exhausted the enzymes needed to break down that particular food, leading to food intolerance.

As you can see, there are many factors that can lead to a very unhealthy internal environment for your immune system. No wonder allergic reactions to food are occuring more and more frequently!

Now lets take a look at what symptoms you may experience from an allergic reaction to food.

  2. Great website, easy for the everyday person to understand. I have just been diagnosed by my naturopath to having intolerances to dairy, wheat, and nuts. It is very frustrating having these intolerances, and am just starting to educate myself, great to know that these foods were causing all my problems in the first place, and the symptoms I was having wasn’t anything too serious. Keep it up, looking forward to reading more articles.
